Western Shores
The Western Shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is approximately 25,000 hectares of savannah grassland and estuarine environment, where a large variety of fauna and flora can be enjoyed. In December 2003 iSimangaliso reintroduced indigenous mammals such as elephant, giraffe and rhino. The Western Shores is famous for frequent sightings of giraffe, white and black rhino, waterbuck and is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The park has been upgraded with new roads, suitable for low clearance vehicles, and has several areas where guests can get out of their vehicles, such as the waterhole bird hide, picnic site and aerial boardwalk.
Makakatana Bay Lodge
Makakatana Bay Lodge is a 4-star lodge situated on the banks of Lake St. Lucia, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The lodge boasts two family rooms, five exclusive suites and one honeymoon suite. All rooms have a private deck, en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower and air conditioning. All suites are nestled in the dune forest and are frequently visited by warthog, red duiker, nyala, bush babies, birds and the occasional hippo! The lodge has a 'boma' for bush dinners, indoor and outdoor dining decks, a swimming pool on the lakes edge and a wine cellar. Makakatana Bay Lodge offers either DBB or all-inclusive which includes all meals plus activities, such as game viewing in open safari vehicles, boat cruises and beach tours. Children above the age of six are welcome at Makakatana Bay Lodge.
