The Valley of Desolation has been formed through volcanic and erosive forces of nature over hundreds of million of years ago. It is a geological phenomenon with sheer vertical cliffs and precariously balanced columns of Dolerite rising 120 metres from the valley floor. This breathtaking site is very rewarding after the steep drive up the mountain. Any visitor to the Camdeboo National Park will be surprised to discover the diversity of fauna and flora. There have been 220 species of birds counted alongside 336 species of plants and 43 different mammals including buffalo, kudu, Cape mountain zebra and the heaviest flying bird in the world: the Kori Bustard.
