This is Africa!

T.I.A. stands for This is Africa

Part of its charm, it refers to the fact that in Africa sometimes things go wrong. We ask you to join us and be patient in these situations. Often there is no choice but to laugh, and simply say: This Is Africa!

Tailor Made Safaris is proud of the fact that our tours are always perfectly arranged, with backup plans for many unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately, in some instances, we are powerless. To help manage your expectations and prepare you for your upcoming adventures, here's a few things you may encounter and our top tips on how to deal with them:

bush toilets

Bush toilets

During game drives you’ll drive for long periods of time through wilderness where toilets are few and far between. Bush toilets however are readily available. Simply inform your guide if you need to stop and he'll find a suitable, safe place.
geckos

Geckos

These small lizards live in almost every home in Southern Africa. They are not dangerous and eat small insect such as pesky mosquitos and flies.

locks

Locks

Some accommodation units in nature reserves have no locks. This is normal and not cause for concern. For peace of mind, keep valuables in the car and use the available latches to prevent monkeys raiding your food supplies.

power failure

Power failures

These occur from time to time whether scheduled or due to storm damage. The length of these power outages varies, though in the event of a scheduled power cut your accommodation should be able to advise you when the lights will come back on. All accommodations will have candles, we suggest that you familiarise yourself with their location on arrival. Some lodges or bush camps only have electricity at certain times of the day. Please ask for the schedule on arrival. Don’t forget to bring a torch!
restaurants

Restaurants

Food might not always meet your expectations. You may encounter slow service, limited menu availability, and soggy chips! To prevent disappointment or frustrations, allow plenty of time for meals and ask for your chips to be well done. That said, food at luxury lodges and 4-star guesthouses is exquisite and you will definitely not be disappointed
room cleanliness

Room cleanliness

All accommodation should be clean when you arrive. If anything is not satisfactory please inform either reception or your guide so the appropriate actions can be taken.

Souvenirs

Souvenirs

Prices vary across the country so it is difficult to advise where is best to buy them. If you like it, buy it, you might not see it again!

Travel times

Travel times

We endeavour to accurately estimate travel time on our tours. Our estimate is based on average speed and does not include any stops. We advise allowing extra time if you plan to stop often.
vehicles

Vehicles

We are proud our cars are in peak condition and well maintained. In the unlikely event something went wrong with your car, we ask for your understanding and patience whilst we resolve the situation.

water shortages

Water shortages

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing drought situation, water shortages do occur. Most accommodations have back up plans for this; however, in extreme circumstances running water may not be available in some provincial parks. We ask that throughout your stay you use water sparingly and that you always have enough drinking water with you.
weather

Weather

Sadly we can’t control the weather. In worst case scenarios, some activities may have to be cancelled due to bad weather. Where possible, we do try to schedule activities around the weather.
wildlife

Wildlife

Part of the beauty of Africa is that it is not a zoo! We, therefore, can’t guarantee you’ll see the Big 5 during your visit, they are wild animals after all.

Finally: Whatever happens, always keep smiling! This Is Africa!
