Founded by the Dutch in 1745, Swellendam is the third oldest settlement in South Africa after Cape Town and Stellenbosch. The hundred year of Dutch presence in the region has left its mark on Swellendam. In the town there are over 50 provincial heritage sites, most of them are Dutch colonial buildings. Ever since the town was founded, it has catered to travellers. In the time of the Dutch and later the British, Swellendam was the most eastern-outpost. These days, it is a popular town on the famous Garden Route. One of the main tourist attractions is the Drostdy Museum. It was built in 1747 and is a perfect example of the conserved architectonical treasures of Swellendam. Next to the Langeberg Mountains lies Swellendam, at the edge of town the Marloth Nature Reserve starts and leads you all the way to the top of the mountain. Along the way you will pass through beautiful forests and waterfalls. The other two nature reserves near Swellendam are the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and the Bontebok National Park; the latter is home to the rare Bonteboks.
