St Lucia is a small village situated within the boundary of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, surrounded by Lake St Lucia on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other side. Lake St Lucia is home to more than 800 hippos and over 1000 crocodiles. St Lucia is famous for the hippos that come and graze in the town at night. St Lucia is known for its ancient lush dune forests, warm Indian Ocean, large hippo and crocodile population, diverse flora and fauna and as a hotspot for birders. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park Covers 332.000 hectares and was listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. You can get closer to the hippos and crocodiles during a hippo and crocodile boat tour, or if you like adventure: try kayaking amongst them. St Lucia is the gateway to the Eastern and Western Shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Other activities possible from St Lucia include whale watching, horse riding, guided game drives into the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and also the famous Big 5 Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. With so much to do in St Lucia it is best to plan at least 3 nights in this special town.
