Rental Cars Overview

Here you will find the extensive range of vehicles which Tailor Made Safaris can offer you. We only work with reputable rental companies such as Avis, Europcar, Bushlore and Britz in order to provide you with the best quality cars and service.

Unless you are particularly fond of certain brand or model, there is actually only one question you should ask yourself: How much space does a certain car provide for people and luggage?

Tailor Made Safaris has gone the extra mile for you and tested each vehicle in person with a certain set of luggage! Below you will find our recommendations for certain group configurations, vehicles to scale and each car's boot space.

Note:
  • The above is just for your information. When making a quote for you, we always pick the best vehicle for your tour. We may suggest bigger vehicles than those named above if we know your tour takes you over bad roads, and/or if you have chosen to do some game drives yourself: higher vehicles offer you a better vantage point to spot animals in tall grass.
  • Rental companies reserve the right to provide a different but similar car in the same or higher class (no extra cost).
  • To rent a car you must submit a credit card, a debit card will be not enough. Without a credit card, you cannot rent a car.
  • The drivers must all be at least 18 years of age and must have had their driver's license for at least one year, and their driver's license must be valid for at least another year after the start of the rental period.
  • Our preferred rental company may vary between countries. We tend to use AVIS for South Africa and Swaziland, Europcar for Namibia...

The TMS boot space test

Right, we took this set of luggage consisting of two large suitcases, a medium and a small soft bag and fitted them in  the most economical way in each vehicle boot.

This gives you a true indication of luggage/boot space of each rental car type. Tailor Made Safaris, at your service!

Vehicle comparison to scale

Find here a side image of each rental vehicle to scale, so you get a realistic idea of its size compared to other rental vehicles.

1. Budget cars

The first 4 cars below are budget cars. Suitable, but a bit slow uphill due a small engine, and not the most comfortable on dirt
roads or if you plan to use them to do game drives in national parks.
Group B

VW Polo hatch or similar

The VW Polo hatch has very little boot space, and won't fit two large hard suitcases.

Group C

Toyota Corolla Quest or similar

Suitable for 2 or 3 people. The Toyota Corolla just fits the luggage, but leaves no space for hand luggage or shopping bags.
Group C: Toyota Corolla Quest

GroUp M

Ford Ecosport or similar

Ideal car for a couple. Don't let the SUV looks fool you: The Ford Ecosport has very little boot space and barely takes two big suitcases.
Group M: Ford Ecosport

Group O

Toyota Avanza or similar

The ideal budget family car. You sit higher, so have a better view over the landscape giving you better game viewing opportunities of animals in tall grass. The Toyota Avanza has a very big boot space for a budget car. It fits luggage of a family easily, whilst still having space for shopping and hand luggage!

2. SUV's

The next 3 car groups are all SUV's, and therefore a little pricier. However, with a higher ground clearance and bigger wheels, they are much more comfortable on dirt roads and in national parks
than budget vehicles. Also, as you sit higher in SUVs, you have a better vantage point for game viewing, and a better chance to spot animals in tall grass.
Group K

Toyota Rav4 or similar

The Toyota Rav4 just fits the luggage for a family, as long as there are a maximum of 2 hard shell suitcases.
Group K: Toyota Rav4

Hyundai Tucson or similar

Although in the same group as the Toyota Rav4, the Hyundai Tucson is slightly bigger. The boot offers quite a bit more space. It is however impossible to request the Tucson over the Rav4 from Avis. It is luck of the draw...

Group L

Nissan X-Trail 4x4 or similar

The Nissan X-Trail 4x4 is a sizeable and very comfortable car. However, for 4 adults with 4 suitcases, the boot will be a little too small, as it only will take a maximum of three hard shell suitcases.

Group I

Toyota Fortuner 4x2 or similar

Now we're talking! Not only is the Toyota Fortuner 4x2 probably the most comfortable vehicle one can rent, it also has a big boot space that will easily take 4 big suitcases. Definitely the best choice if traveling with 4 adults.

3. Other vehicle types

Group W

Nissan Hardbody

This is the primary vehicle we rent for people traveling to Namibia. Boot space doesn't get bigger than this. Although the vehicle only takes five passengers max, it can take luggage for up to 8.
Group W: Nissan Hardbody
Group N

Hyundai H1 minibus or similar

The below minibus is suitable for groups of between 5 and 8 people. It offers window seats for 6 travellers. The Hyundai H1 minibus is the most spacious vehicle Avis has on offer, and indeed has a huge boot space.
