Pongola Game Reserve is a nature reserve in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province spread over 30 000 hectares of pristine bushveld on the banks of the Pongola River which meanders through the centre of the reserve before entering the man-made 13 276 hectare Pongolapoort Dam also known as 'Lake Jozini'. The reserve also offers a mountain scenery where a variety of bird species nest. The reserve hosts 4 of the big 5 and is well stocked with giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, impala, buffalo and hyena to mention a few. Pongola Game Reserve is also a birding hotspot, with over 350 recorded bird species.
Mvubu River Lodge
Mvubu River Lodge is situated within the Pongola Game Reserve on a hillside, overlooking the Pongola River where game frequently come down to quench their thirst. This African Colonial style lodge guarantees panoramic views of the reserve. It is the ideal place in which to relax and enjoy regular sightings of hippopotamus, crocodile and the many species of general game that are found in the reserve. The lodge offers a range of activities such as Game Drives in open vehicles with a professional guide, boat cruise safaris, fishing excursions, guided game walks or you can join one of the armed guides for Rhino Tracking. Accommodation is in 11 twin and 2 double en-suite chalets all with air conditioning, ceiling fans, mini bar fridges, tea and coffee facilities and private verandas. The chalets combine comfort and simplicity with architectural use of stone, wood, reeds and thatch. The central area of the lodge includes the Hippo Hole bar, TV lounge with DSTV, covered open plan lounge and dining area, boma, swimming pool and curio shop. Children below the age of 12 are regrettably not welcome at Mvubu River Lodge.
Nkwazi Lake Lodge
Nkwazi Lake Lodge is situated within the Pongola Game Reserve South in Northern Zululand. Nkwazi Lake Lodge is set on a hillside overlooking the Pongola River and is the perfect place to combine the excitement of Tiger fishing and game viewing with the tranquility of the bush and panoramic views of lake and savannah bush. The lodge offers a range of activities such as Game Drives in open vehicles with a professional guide, boat cruise safaris, fishing excursions, guided game walks or you can join on of the armed guides for Rhino Tracking. The lodge accommodates 32 guests in 12 en-suite thatched chalets and 2 family chalets consisting of a living area, 2 bedrooms with twin beds and en-suite bathrooms. All chalets are tastefully furnished and have air conditioning, mini bar fridges tea and coffee facilities and private verandas. Children are welcome at Nkwazi Lake Lodge based on the availability of suitable rooms because of the rugged and sloping landscape.
