Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve is the perfect destination for nature lovers who wish to explore the dramatic mountain landscape, waterfalls and forests of Swaziland. Here you will find outstanding views and beautiful landscapes, as well as interesting cultural sites nearby. Most remarkable is the Phophonyane River, which tumbles down for a few hundred metres in a series of cascades and pools. Local legends say that this river is formed by the tears of a grieving mother, whose son was seized by witches and turned into a white flower for hunting a forbidden leopard. Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve falls within the Barbeton Centre of Plant Endemism and protects the rich biodiversity of this increasingly threatened habitat. The reserve is 600 hectares in extent and boasts an impressive bird list of 240 species, including the beautiful and elusive, Narina Trogon. Besides the Phophonyane River and prolific birdlife, you will also find some of the world’s oldest rocks, dated at 3.55 billion years!
