Between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Swartberg Mountains you will find Oudtshoorn, a small town situated in the Western Cape and the capital of the Little Karoo. This great destination is home to many attractions! For example, you’ll find the fantastic Cango Caves here, Africa’s largest and only show cave system. Be amazed by the greatest dripstone caverns with their vast halls and towering formations. Ostrich farms started occurring in Oudtshoorn around 1900 due to the ideal climate for ostrich farming in the Little Karoo. Oudtshoorn is therefore now known as the ostrich capital of South Africa. During a visit to an ostrich farm and/or museum you will be taught about the ostriches and their history and have an opportunity to feed them! Even though the opportunity is often offered, from an ethical point of view, we do urge you not to ride them. The scenery of the region is also astounding and an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge. Take a scenic drive up the Swartberg Pass, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.
