After Kruger, the biggest park in South Africa is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park; 3.6 million hectares. The park stretches across the Botswana border and is an amalgamation of what was the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. The Nossob and Auob riverbeds run through the park with red desert landscapes between them. The rivers are dry most of the year, flooding seasonally, but as shade and underground water are often found in the riverbeds, wildlife concentrates in and around them. The desert landscape and lack of vegetation makes wildlife viewing much easier. The animal life in the Kgalagadi has to be the most impressive of all the parks in the Northern Cape. It has an incredible number of antelope, including huge herds of springbok. Along with the numerous herbivores the predators reign, with leopard, cheetah, brown hyaena and the famous Kalahari lion all-present.
SANParks
South African National Parks, better known as SANParks accommodation offers several accommodation options throughout the park. These camps range from large rest camps (Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata) to more rustic tented bush or wilderness camps. At the main rest camps self-catering chalets are available, with small shops where you can stock up on basic supplies and fuel stations. Some of the main rest camps have swimming pools and one has a restaurant on site. All camps in the park are extremely popular and due to the limited number of chalets available, can be booked up well in advance; we are not always able to find accommodation in the park. Children of all ages are welcomed at all SANParks accommodations.
