Kanoneiland is the largest island in the Orange River, it also the largest inland island in South Africa. These days the island is largely cultivated and covered with vineyards. This process began in 1928 when a group of settlers moved to the island. Before that the island was densely forested and was inhabited by the Koranna river pirates who staged raids inland from the island. In 1879 a force of policemen with a small canon attacked the island. Looking for a way to hit back at the policemen the pirates built they’re own cannon. Unfortunately the cannon blew up on the first attempt killing 6 pirates. As a result of this incident the Island was called Kanoneiland. Today the main reason to visit Kanoneiland is the vineyards, which produce some of South Africa’s best wines. Wine tasting tours can be arranged at several places on the island.
