The Erongo Mountain Range can be found in the northern part of Namibia. These beautiful mountains are actually just the leftovers of a huge volcano that was active around 150 million years ago. When the volcano collapsed, the granite mountains were formed. The area is now home to a vast array of plant, mammal, reptile and bird species, some endemic to Namibia. The other big attraction that draws people to the Erongo Mountains are the ancient rock paintings. These paintings have been dated as far back as 2700 years. The most famous is the ‘White Elephant’, which depicts a number of animals as well as human handprints. These drawings have been accredited to the San people who lived in the area.
