Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve is a must for hiking enthusiasts both experienced and beginners. The park has over 18 hiking trails, varying in length from 2 to 10 kilometres. Choose any of these routes to see some of the many spectacular sights the Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve has to offer. For experienced hikers the park has a special treat. The hike to the top of the Cathedral peak has some of the best views in South Africa. The hike takes between 11 to 13 hours to complete and is 22 kilometres. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. For guests who do not wish to walk far the views from the camp are also beautiful! During your hikes you are very likely to encounter local wildlife. The bearded vulture for instance lives in the reserve and can be seen regularly. There are also many other bird species to admire during your stay. The San people also known as the Bushmen originally inhabited the Cathedral Peak region. Their cave drawings can still be seen today and are documented as some of the earliest cave drawings found.
Didima Camp
Didima Camp is situated in the Cathedral Peak valley at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. Its 3-star self-catering chalets have been modelled after the homes of the indigenous San people. These nomads inhabited the hills for thousands of years before being forced off their lands. Today Didima Camp stands as a reminder of their culture. Guests can visit the Didima Rock Art Centre to learn about this almost forgotten culture. The camp has a shop for your most basic supplies; the closest towns with full services are 45 kilometres away. Children of all ages are welcome at Didima Camp.
Cathedral Peak Hotel
Cathedral Peak Hotel is a beautiful 4-star venue nestled in the Drakensberg Mountains. The current owners father established the original hotel, which opened its doors in 1939. Today the Cathedral Peak Hotel caters to guests from all over the world. It is popular with families as well as couples looking for a romantic getaway. The hotel has a wide range of luxury facilities including a fully equipped gym with a steam bath, a pool table and a bar where people can watch sports on the big screen. The hotel grounds contain a 9-hole golf course which can has alternate tees for an 18-hole game. Children are welcome at the Cathedral Peak Hotel. A separate dining room for children is available along with babysitting services on request.
